Hi Folks, Senator Tom Casperson has introduced Senate Bill 248 which would limit how much land the state could own/ purchase. Currently, there is 4.5 million acres owned. SB 248 would require that the DNR/State sell land before it purchased more. This is VERY important legislation because currently the state does NOT the full value of taxes on land that it owns. Not only are taxes limited to what's known as PILT (which is less than Agricultural valuations), but the state is NOT REQUIRED TO PAY 100% of it's tax bill!! The DNR continues to tell the legislature that it must close campgrounds because it cannot pay to keep them open, then turns around and buys land. This is because of the FUNDING SOURCES. Caring for land comes from one account; while buying land comes from another. PLEASE WRITE TO THESE SENATORS (on Nat Resources Sen Committee), and your OWN senator and tell them that you SUPPORT SB 248: Use the "Lansing Contacts" link above for phone numbers and email addresses and to find your own senator. And send a copy to lmichalak@senate.michigan.gov; Rick.Snyder@michigan.gov; Brian.Calley@michigan.gov
